We are all familiar with and adore the NCIS characters, particularly the stoic and often solemn Leroy Jethro Gibbs. But even our favorite characters have moments when they are out of the loop.
In one hilarious scene from NCIS season 13 episode 12 titled Sister City (Part 1), Gibbs fails to recognize a Marvel joke.
Director Vance makes a reference to Tony Stark, the Marvel universe’s tech genius and superhero known as Iron Man, in the episode.
He goes on to say, “I’m thinking it’s time we bring Tony Stark in for questioning.” But Gibbs just stares at him blankly, as if he has no idea who Iron Man is.
Vance mentions to a perplexed Gibbs that his son collects Iron Man figures in an attempt to explain the joke. Gibbs simply replies that he appears to be collecting them as well.
Gibbs is a staunch traditionalist. He’s not one to follow the latest fashions or fads. His life revolves around his job, his team, and his hobby of boat building.
Plus, let’s face it, Gibbs is from a generation that may not be the target audience for superhero films. Yes, he has a daughter, but girls are typically less interested in superheroes.
This episode’s standout moment isn’t just the Marvel reference. Sister City is a significant episode in NCIS history for those who are unfamiliar with the context. It’s not only episode 12 of season 13, but it’s also the first part of a crossover with NCIS: New Orleans.
The plot revolves around a mysterious case in which the passengers and flight crew of a private plane are discovered dead as a result of poisoning.
As the NCIS team delves deeper into the investigation, they work with their counterparts in New Orleans, resulting in some intense and intriguing moments.
However, in the midst of all the drama and tension, it is these lighthearted and amusing moments that make us smile and appreciate the show’s appeal. Throughout its run, NCIS made references to other iconic films and franchises such as The Godfather, Alien, Top Gun, and many more.
