As the matriarch of a celebrity family – her legacy includes celebrated actors Oliver (47) and Kate Hudson (45), and Wyatt Russell (37) – Goldie Hawn is a force to be reckoned.

In her earlier years, there was no stopping Hawn, whose girl-next-door look landed her starring roles in films like Stephen Spielberg’s The Sugarland Express (1972), Private Benjamin (1980), and 1987’s Overboard with long-time partner Kurt Russell, whom she’s been coupled with since 1983.

Twice divorced before connecting with the now 73-year-old Russell, Hawn told Woman’s Day in 2007 why the two chose not to marry: “We have done just perfectly without marrying. I already feel devoted, and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do?”

And Kate, who won a Golden Globe for her performance in Almost Famous, insists the two “complement each other so well.”

“Mom is kinetic and she is a butterfly. And Pa likes his family and his home. But when they’re together, it’s so powerful,” says Hudson of her mom and stepfather, who share son Wyatt, also an actor.

‘Wonderful to know that you’re aging’

After almost five decades of acting and bearing three children, the Oscar-winning Hawn is still stunning, her famous golden locks all natural.

“Getting older is a fact of life. By living mindfully, you understand that there are many transitions in life, [and] you just have to go through them,” the star told People. “It’s wonderful to know that you’re aging because that means you’re still on the planet, right?”

But she is very aware of the age bias that exists in the industry and among its fans.

Speaking of the ageism that exists in Hollywood, Hawn said it is a battle women will never stop fighting.

“You think you’re going to fight the system? You think you’re going to prove to Hollywood when you hit 45 that you’re still a sexy, viable object? No. There’s a certain reality,” Hawn tells Bazaar. “Does it make me angry? No. I’m not an angry person. I’m not a militant person. Anger doesn’t get you anywhere. It’s not productive.”

And though the star of The First Wives Club embraces aging, she can’t escape the flood of hate that appears on social media.
