Sofia Vergara reveals heartbreaking reason she and Joe Manganiello divorced: ‘It’s not fair’
Nearly six months after Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello announced their divorce, the actress shared the true reason behind their split after seven years of marriage. The revelation emerged in a recent interview with the Spanish newspaper El País.
Vergara, aged 51, disclosed that the couple wasn’t on the same page regarding expanding their family. Despite already having a 32-year-old son from her first marriage with Joe Gonzalez, the Modern Family star and Manganiello, 47, faced a fundamental disagreement.
“My marriage broke up because my husband was younger; he wanted to have kids and I didn’t want to be an old mom,” Vergara explained to the newspaper, expressing her belief that it wouldn’t be fair to the potential child. She conveyed her respect for those who choose parenthood later in life but clarified that it’s not a path she wishes to pursue anymore.
Commenting on her age, Vergara added, “I had a son at 19, who is now 32, and I’m ready to be a grandmother, not a mother. So, if love comes along, he has to come with [his own] children.” She emphasized her readiness for a different role in life.
“I’m almost in menopause; it’s the natural way of things,” she stated, envisioning a future where her son becomes a father. She humorously described her role as a grandmother, proposing, “When my son becomes a dad, let him bring the baby to me for a while, and then I’ll give it back to him and go on with my life; that’s what I have to do.”
The former Hollywood couple officially announced their separation in July 2023. In a joint statement, they requested respect for their privacy as they navigated this new phase of their lives. Two days later, Manganiello filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences.”
While Joe Manganiello has moved on, Sofia Vergara mentioned her single status during a recent appearance on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. The article concludes by acknowledging and respecting Sofia Vergara’s decision, highlighting that while some older parents successfully care for young children, it’s not a choice suitable for everyone.
